The DIII-D National Fusion Facility in Torrey Pines, CA is the U.S.’s principal magnetically confined fusion research facility, focusing on the exciting science of the burning plasma state and its control in preparation for ITER, and developing the path to self-driven fully non-inductive operation for future fusion reactors. It has a strong focus on underlying science, and the application of this to improve fusion performance.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Scientist to join the DIII-D pedestal program to develop and understand the processes that govern pedestal structure, and how to integrate high performance core plasmas with suitable mitigated divertor solutions through advanced pedestal solutions. The position will focus on analysis and experiments, but may include diagnostic development and provision.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The jobholder is expected to conduct leading edge scientific work, presenting it at international conferences and in leading scientific journals.
Explore pedestal physics and its interaction with the divertor, assessing mechanisms of turbulent transport and neutral fueling in the pedestal and the coupling of a high beta, fully non-inductive core plasma to a viable boundary solution.
Although based in pedestal group, work is expected to couple closely to the scenario development program to develop advanced modes of operation, particularly high density core-edge integration scenarios.
Work will also develop international collaboration opportunities on MAST-U, EAST and JET
The post will involve becoming familiar with pedestal fitting tools, potentially developing these further and providing these to the program
The post will also involve developing other innovative analysis and simulation approaches, and their exploitation in order to answer critical pedestal physics questions and projection to future devices. This might include neutral modeling, for instance.
The post may involve engagement with relevant control development and control science.
The post may also involve assistance with provision of other diagnostics systems such as CER pertinent to the above research, in a supporting role as needed, in context of other responsibilities.
The post may involve leading-edge diagnostic development, particularly in the pedestal area and with an emphasis on new concepts.
The post may involve training as a physics operator, though this is not necessarily expected at an early stage.
Undertake associated collaborative research with U.S. and international facilities.
Periodic travel to other national and international institutions, working with their teams to identify and perform collaborative research.
Work will require facility in moving rapidly from one task area to another, for example from tasks that primarily entail physics analysis, to tasks that entail implementation of operational tokamak solutions to scenario and control problems.
The successful applicant is expected to exhibit a high degree of initiative, propose experiments and other projects, publish in recognized scientific journals, present work at national level, organize their research projects, and work with and provide support to the wider DIII-D and General Atomics teams.

The level of the post and scope of responsibilities are negotiable based on expertise on applicant.
Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in a scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; six or more years experience with a Bachelors degree, four or more years experience with a Masters degree, and two or more with a PhD. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
Experience in performing pedestal experiments and analysis and/or modeling is highly desirable.
Must possess the ability to; (1) understand new concepts quickly; (2) apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; (3) organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, (4) determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one scientific area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
