We have an exciting opportunity for a Mid-Level Data Scientist/Root Cause Engineer to join our Root Cause Analysis Engineering group in San Diego, CA.
This position is responsible for providing Root Cause Analysis (RCA) support to engineering and other departments. The position will report to the Root Cause Analysis supervisor in the Engineering Services organization. The Data Scientist/RCA Engineer is expected to possess a strong engineering background combined with excellent critical thinking skills and an affinity for evaluating large datasets in order to extract knowledge relevant to failure investigations. The primary focus will be in applying data mining techniques, performing statistical analysis, building high quality prediction systems integrated with our products, and developing clear, comprehensive presentations. The Data Scientist/RCA Engineer must also ensure compliance with applicable product standards, governing laws and regulations, and company quality system requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop fault trees to determine areas of focus for RCA activities
Must be able to interpret and comprehend engineering drawings, schematics, technical reports, and technical specifications for complex systems
Data mining using state-of-the-art methods from multiple sources using commercial and internally developed tools
Develop analytical tools and code
Select features, build, and optimize classifiers using machine learning techniques
Enhance data collection procedures to include information relevant for building analytic systems
Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis
Perform ad-hoc data analysis and present results in a clear manner
Create automated anomaly detection systems and track performance on continual basis
Perform root cause analysis, problem solving, continuous improvement, and related corrective and preventive action activities as they relate to subsystem integrity
Failure investigation activities such as detailed data analysis, part teardown inspections, and failure mode identification
Generate and brief detailed technical presentations and reports
Develop, standardize, and manage department methods and processes related to RCA and subsystem integrity
Ensure compliance with technical standards
Provide input to the development of test procedures, operational procedures, design requirements, specifications, standards, test reports, and other products related to RCA investigation and findings
Clearance Level: Secret
Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
Experience with Python, SQL, or similar programming language
Substantial knowledge of basic and advanced prediction models
Strong Microsoft Excel skills
Capable of interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, reports, and specifications
Personal Computer knowledge: MS Word; MS Excel, MS Project, etc.
Able to work extended hours as required
Familiarity with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) techniques, Familiar Mod.e Effects Analysis (FMEA), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), and/or MTBF calculations is preferred
Experience with aircraft system design, analysis, testing, and/or operations is desired
A Professional Engineering License is desirable
