We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to work within our Mechanical Systems group as part of the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. Under limited supervision, this position will conduct structural design, analysis, and supervision of fabrication and installation of system components, assemblies and sub-systems. Upcoming projects may include high heat flux plasma facing components, RF antenna subsystems, or EM coil systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops innovative and practical solutions to challenging designs. Involved from conceptual design through production and installation.
Develops design and manufacturing techniques for various components. Works closely with vendors to ensure project success.
Performs structural analysis and design of components, assemblies and sub-systems to evaluate structural deflections as well as mechanical and thermal stresses utilizing SolidWorks and ANSYS engineering simulation software.
Applies knowledge of high-vacuum compatibility, rigid body dynamics, finite element analysis, fatigue, strength of materials, thermal and electrical properties and material attributes to develop solutions and solve problems.
May work as a member of a design team on larger projects, or individually.
May direct technical staff.
Documents design and analyses findings, communicates results to engineering staff and makes written technical presentations. Capable of delivering oral and written presentations of technical work to internal and external audiences.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
Proficient in the use of Solidworks and Ansys preferred.
Must possess a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts.
Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
Must have strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, be customer focused, and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment.
Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
Must have proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
