General Atomics and Affiliated Companies Air Vehicle Conceptual Design Engineer in Poway, California

We are pleased to announce this exciting opportunity for an experienced, results-oriented engineer to conceive and develop new air vehicles in a dynamic environment. The individual chosen for this role will perform air vehicle conceptual design, including development of relevant tools and technologies, performing design trade studies and leading development teams. With limited direction, this position exercises considerable latitude for initiating and developing designs, procedures, techniques and solutions to solve advanced technical engineering problems. Serves as a consulting resource of engineering knowledge, drives requirements development, applies the latest technological advancements to the problem, and may function in a project leadership role. Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff and executive leadership, makes technical presentations. May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small identifiable projects. Provides direction to design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design new air vehicles and modifications to existing air vehicles. Develop analysis tools and perform mathematical modeling of air vehicles. Identify and evaluate technologies which enable marketable new products.

  • Responsibilities will include conceptual air vehicle design, multi-disciplinary design optimization, aircraft sizing, trade study execution, sensitivity analysis, requirements development, vehicle configuration layout, and briefing senior management on results. Responsibilities may include cost modeling, aircraft performance analysis, mission planning / CONOPS preparation, mathematical modeling, simulation development, project planning, and documentation of results.

  • Position requires strong analytical and communication skills (written & oral), a broad knowledge of aeronautical sciences and ability to work closely with a wide variety of groups including but not limited to Aerodynamics, Structures, Propulsion, Thermal, Weights, Power Electronics, Software, Flight Test, Systems Engineering.

  • Candidate must be competent with MATLAB or Python, MS office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project), and have excellent technical writing and time management skills.

  • Familiarity with multi-disciplinary design optimization (e.g. MATLAB Optimization toolbox, Mode Frontier, Model Center), techniques to handle problems with many input/output variables (e.g. OpenMDAO) and large data sets in a computationally efficient manner is required.

  • Experience working 1 or more aircraft development program from conceptual design through flight test is desirable

  • Expert user of MATLAB or Python is highly desirable, as is experience with any of the following functions and tools:

  • Air vehicle design/analysis (e.g. RDSWin, AAA, FLOPS) and NX, CREO or similar CAD/lofting

  • Effectiveness modeling (AFSIM, COMMAND)

  • Life Cycle Cost Estimation (SEER-H, Price True Planning)

  • Model Based Systems Engineering (CAMEO, MagicDraw)

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) (e.g. XFOIL, XROTOR, DFDC, AVL, MSES, VSPAERO, SU2)

  • MATLAB Simulink, Flight Dynamics, 6DOF modeling, Autopilot integration

  • Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD) or aeroservoelasticity (e.g. ASWing/ZAERO)

  • Utilization of cloud-based, massively parallel and HPC resources

  • Other structured programming language (e.g. Java, FORTRAN, C++, Lua)

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Demonstrates extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.

  • Must be able to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills enabling an effective interface with other departments and professionals. Capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.

  • Customer focused, formulates plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.

  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Able to work extended hours as required.

  • Original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, and invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium are desirable.
