General Atomics Airframe Project Systems Engineer in Adelanto, California
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.
GA-ASI has an exciting opportunity at our prototype Research and Development facility in Adelanto, CA, for a Project Engineer to support the development of prototype proof-of-concept aircraft for GA’s next generation of unmanned aircraft systems and payloads. This role offers a unique rotational assignment, providing the successful candidate with hands-on experience across multiple engineering functions, including Project Engineering, Structural Test, Design, and R&D Manufacturing.
The Project Engineer will engage in all phases of the prototype aircraft development process, from initial CONOPS exploration and conceptual design to detailed systems development, fabrication, flight testing, and customer demonstrations. This rotational structure is designed to broaden the candidate's technical expertise and develop a comprehensive understanding of the entire development lifecycle. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with aircraft homebuilding experience, a current or in-progress pilot’s license, or other relevant experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core Engineering Responsibilities:
Define technical objectives and develop innovative solutions for advanced engineering challenges, acting as a primary technical contact within the engineering team for assigned projects and programs.
Provide technical support to senior engineers
Formulate, plan, and implement engineering solutions, including resource allocation, requirements development, testing, documentation, compliance, and safety adherence.
Support ongoing maintenance, reporting, and presentations of engineering solutions to ensure they remain viable in a dynamic environment.
Engage in new business development opportunities and participate in expanding current business initiatives.
Maintain compliance with applicable laws and safety protocols; uphold company standards and procedures.
Specialized Rotational Responsibilities:
Project Engineering – Oversee and coordinate the entire prototype design and development process. Responsibilities include task planning, requirements management, verification and validation efforts, and design review coordination. Provide technical support to senior engineers for prototype projects by supporting design activities, resolving technical issues, and ensuring efficient use of resources. Develop and monitor project schedules, interface with stakeholders, and support project progress. Serve as a technical liaison within the Adelanto facility and across GA-ASI locations, facilitating clear communication, resolving technical issues, and ensuring proper documentation of project-related actions and interfaces.
Structural Test – Support testing and validation of aircraft structures, including developing test plans, executing structural tests, analyzing results, and ensuring compliance with design requirements.
Design – Contribute to the conceptual and detailed design of prototype systems, assisting with CAD modeling, design reviews, and documentation, while integrating feedback from structural tests and project requirements.
R&D Manufacturing – Participate in the prototype manufacturing process by coordinating with fabrication teams, overseeing component assembly, and implementing process improvements for efficient manufacturing.

Job Qualifications:
Typically requires a bachelors degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
Must have a basic understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory.
Demonstrates the ability to follow and apply basic engineering knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required diagnostics, tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
Must be able to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
Good communication, computer, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other professionals, to produce appropriate documentation, and to present results to a limited internal audience.
Must be able to work both independently and on a team.
Able to work extended hours as required.
An EIT (Engineer in Training) certificate is desirable.
Ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance is required.
